Kindness Rocks

by Ginger Lessard (October, 2022)

The Junior Rockhounds typically meets on the first Saturdays of the month at the clubhouse. The Junior Rockhounds met on October 1st the Clubhouse, and we painted rocks for the “Kindness Rocks” project. We went over the rules about procuring the rocks: Take no rocks from neighbors’ or business’ landscaping. ‘Release’ the painted rocks in open spaces, not in places that will disturb nature or ruin a lawn mower or places of business without permis-sion. You can collect smooth rocks from creek beds and rivers, hiking trails; Home Depot and Lowe’s sells a smooth tile like form, but they are glued onto mesh and cardboard. So you will need to boil them on the stove so you can scrape off the glue residue and let them dry in the sun for a day or two. Erik recommends 2 or 3 base coats of flat white acrylic paint, spraying the top and the bottom; it helps your paint show up better. Let dry between coats and let them dry for 24 hours before you start to paint your design. You can also use a paint brush and paint the rocks individually any color you want. Once they are good and dry paint on your design. You can draw the design using a pencil, or trace a design from a stencil. Once you are done let them air dry for a day or two before you seal them. Before you seal them write the following on the bot-tom “Please join on f #CCGMSROCKS! Post a pic. Keep or rehide.” There are lots of rock painting kits for sale out there; I got mine at Ollie’s. For acrylic paint, you can use Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear Enamel to seal the rocks top and bottom 3 coats with dry time in between coats. We did not have our normal crowd since the week before and after was Fall Break in the local schools.
